The Story Behind the
Club
Gippsland Historical Automobile Club
Incorporated was founded in 1968 by a handful of enthusiasts who
felt there was a need to establish a local Club. The prime objects
of the club were to assist those who were interested in the
preservation of all types of historic motor vehicles, motor cycles,
tractors and stationary engines within the following date of
manufacture.
-
Veteran Motor Vehicles & engines manufactured
prior to January 1st 1919
-
Vintage Motor Vehicles & engines manufactured
between January 1919 and 31st December 1930
-
Classic Motor Vehicles & engines manufactured
between January 1931 & 25 years of age or older
The Club was established to allow Gippsland
enthusiasts to use and enjoy their own vehicles, engines etc without
the need to travel to other parts of the country. Members can hold
membership with other Clubs of their choice and joint activities
with other kindred Clubs is encouraged.
As the Club membership grew it was found necessary
to form ‘Branches’ in various parts of Gippsland so that members
would have a better opportunity to get together. The Club formed six
such Branches meeting in Morwell, Bairnsdale, Leongatha, Heyfield,
Bunyip and Archies Creek.
All of these Branches are now incorporated and
operating independently under their own Rules but still retaining
their attachment to the Club as Branch Members. The Management
Committee of the Club comprises two representatives of each Branch
plus a President and meets everytwo months. There are three
categories of individual membership, family, single and junior.
Being a member of a Branch is a prerequisite. Membership provides
access to a library, a monthly newsletter, and information to assist
with dating of vehicle/engine, participation in The Victorian Club
Permit Scheme as well as social outings and displays.
The Club rooms are situated in four hectares of landscaped
recreation grounds at Toners Lane, Morwell. The facilities
include a large meeting room used extensively for social
functions, kitchen, showers, toilets, barbeque area and a play area
for children. Through the medium of the club’s monthly newsletter
and the exchange of newsletters with another forty clubs in
Australia everyone is kept in contact with club activities. The
editor welcomes items of interest for publication. Advertisements
for vehicles, engines and parts wanted or for sale are featured in
this publication. GHAC is a member club of the Victorian division of
the Federation of Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Car Clubs
and the Association of Motoring Clubs Inc. GHAC will consider
joining other groups with similar interests for the benefit of
preserving historical vehicles/engines etc and for social
interchange. This Club has been an approved Club under ‘The
Victorian Club Permit Scheme” for most of its existence and enjoys a
working relationship with VicRoads.
The Club welcomes enquiries from anyone interested
in learning more about the fascinating subject of historic vehicles
and associated activities.
